Diani Beach is a beach on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. Diani Beach is located 30 kilometers south of Mombasa, in Kwale County. Diani Beach is about 17 kilometres (11 mi) long, from the Kongo river to the north and Galu beach to the south (the southern point of reference is an old Baobab tree). Diani is one of the most prominent tourism holiday resort areas of Kenya. The indigenous people of the Diani Beach area are the Digo, one of the nine ethnic communities known as the Mijikenda. Today the area includes Kenyans of various ethnicities who have migrated to Diani, drawn by the tourism related economy. With a population of over 100,000 inhabitants, the Diani/Ukunda urban area is one of the largest at the Kenyan coast and forms part of the larger Mombasa metropolitan region. A small airstrip - Ukunda Airport - is located between the beach area and the Mombasa-Lunga Lunga Road. The water remains shallow near shore, with some underwater sandbars near the surface which allow wading with a clear view of the sandy bottom. The 16th century Kongo Mosque is located at the Northern tip of Diani Beach, where the Kongo River flows into the ocean separating Diani beach from Tiwi. It is the last remaining ancient Swahili structure in Diani. Flowing from Shimba Hills, the Kongo River forms an estuary as it enters the Indian Ocean. Best time to go to Diani:

Thanks to its warm, tropical climate Diani Beach is an all-year-round destination with an average temperature of 26 Celsius (compared to London 11 °C, NYC 12 °C, LA 17.9 °C). Its high humidity brings a pleasant sea breeze which perfectly balances out the African sun and is also the reason for Diani’s ideal kitesurfing conditions. Contrary to what one might think, the best time to visit Diani Beach in Kenya is between the cooler months of July to September and the dry months from December to March. The region experiences a mild rainy season starting towards the end of April / beginning of May and lasting until July, but don’t let this stop you from traveling during this time. Rainfall during the rainy season usually occurs in the late afternoon or during the night which means that it won’t interfere with your daily routine. If you are sensitive to high temperatures, August is the ideal time to travel to Diani Beach as it is also considered the “coldest” month with an average of 24 Celsius (compared to its warmest month in March with an average temperature of 29 Celsius!).

Getting to Diani By Road

For those who prefer self-driving, you can comfortably drive to Diani from any part in Kenya. Driving down by car is a whole day’s trip, but at least you need not necessarily pass through Mombasa which saves some time. You can avoid the Mombasa traffic jams and the Likoni ferry bottleneck by branching off Mombasa Highway in Samburu, and then driving through the Shimba Hills.

Getting to Diani By Air

There are many direct flights to Nairobi, Kenya from many European hubs, USA, Arab countries and the Asian Continent as well. The most popular ones include Frankfurt (Lufthansa), Newyork (Kenya Airways) Zurich (Swiss), Amsterdam (KLM), London (British Airways, Kenya Airways) or Paris (Kenya Airways). If you do not intend to spend some days in Nairobi or to go on safari once you’ve landed, you’re better-off flying directly to Ukunda, Diani from JKIA.

Flying to Diani Beach

If you opt to fly to Diani Beach from Nairobi or Mombasa, then you have three options; you can fly from Nairobi’s Wilson airport via Safarilink and Silverstone, fly from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport via or Jambo Jet. or flying from Moi International Airport in Mombasa via Mombasa Air Safari - There are also private charter planes that fly people in and out of Diani to nearly any location in Kenya, the most common being Maasai Mara, Mombasa, Kisumu & Vipingo.

Diani by Bus from Nairobi

There are at least two buses leaving from Nairobi to Ukunda (Diani): Chania and Simba. Fare is about 1400 shillings ($14). The buses, are however, not as comfortable as those leaving Nairobi from Mombasa.

Diani by Ferry from Mombasa

If you’re travelling to Diani from Mombasa, you’ll need to use the Likoni ferry to reach Diani Beach. The five-minute crossing runs regularly throughout the day. After getting off the ferry, the drive to Diani is roughly about thirty minutes on a relatively good tarmac road. Numerous matatus (minibuses) operate that route from the Likoni ferry in Mombasa directly to Ukunda (KSh200, 30 minutes), the junction for Diani, and onwards to Msambweni.

Transportation in Diani

The main means of transportation in Diani is tuk-tuks which should cost Kshs 50 per person per trip. However, you can always choose to use Uber or Bolt.
